Save Our Young, Virginal Girls!!!11!1

Okay, so I was not happy when I heard that certain cartoon figures were getting makeovers. The two foremost examples of this are Strawberry Shortcake and Dora the Explorer, whose new image was only recently revealed:

Dora The Explorer

They indeed look like they have progressed from being five years old to being 12 years old. Is this really what little girls want, however? I don’t think a six-year-old would really care that much, given the choice, and if these companies think that preteen Dora will attract actual preteens, then they are seriously deluded. In a world where Hannah Montana & Jonas Brothers sit at the top of the heap and Seventeen magazine is actually read by 13-year-olds, these new figures will never make it big.

Clearly, these decisions were probably driven by a desire for profit. In time, though, children will grow out of their old playmates altogether and move on to something else, although I admittedly never grew out of my love for Pokémon, heh. I really hope that they don’t try to age these characters any further, though, otherwise we’ll be seeing “Dora Explores College!” bedsheets at Wal-Mart in a few years.

What The Freakanese

What what [in the butt]?!?

New casting puts Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel in as Prince Zuko in The Last Airbender.

Social implications aside, okay, yay, they cast an Asian in a leading role, but they really could’ve tried a little harder to find someone who resembles the character. Oh wait, they don’t care! This movie is a lost cause. The dude playing Sokka is pretty cute though, to be honest. What are they all going to look like with weird anime hair? Dammit, now I’m curious.

O Boy O Boy O Boy

Although Harry Potter’s bath scene in Goblet of Fire made me squeal, I’ve always thought Ron Weasley was the cuter of the two.

The trailer:

And this comment summarizes my thoughts exactly:

I loved the 5th book, but the movie was vastly underwhelming, and experiencing that after the boredom that was the 7th book just killed my inner HP fire.

Who’s Got Talent?

First impressions don’t usually carry anything substantial about the person being judged. I’ve never watched an episode of Britain’s Got Talent, but I’m not sure why they still react so cynically when presented with a person who perhaps does not already look like a superstar — a while ago I wrote about Paul Potts, who also appeared on the show. Outwardly he was unimpressive, but he had the voice of a well-trained opera singer.

More recently, Simon Cowell & co. were faced with Susan Boyle, an unassuming 47-year-old lady whose dream is to become a professional singer [I love how they spliced in clips of audience members rolling their eyes]:

I’m not sure how the show works, and what exactly she wins, but I’m very happy for her. Hopefully this success will allow her to find some work…
