Shorts I
These are some of my favorite short films. For more, proceed to pages 2 and 3.
If you haven’t seen this yet, do yourself a favor & watch it immediately. Then please let me know the name of the shirtless one so I can Google him, thanks.
23 George & AJ
Ever wonder what happened on the ground after Carl takes his house flying?

The first non-animated short film I’m posting here. You wouldn’t expect a story about a shopping cart to be emotionally wrenching, but here it is.

Featuring an extraordinarily cute and unique style of animation, this short takes a relaxing pace that ends up being charmingly satisfying.
20 Tarboy
I won’t actually embed this one because it kind of automatically starts making noise, but it’s worth watching. The animation, which was all done with Flash, is nothing revolutionary, but the storyline is actually kind of compelling, and the writing is pretty good. My favorite line was near the beginning when Gramps was listing the names of the chief evil robots. See if you can catch it.

2009 Oscar winner for best animated short film. If Up made you cry, this one might elicit similar emotions. Though Japanese in origin, the style of animation seems very European.
Although this short is a little older, it is still classically funny. Don’t pick on the big, stupid-looking ones!

This one starts out like any other Mario parody, but it gets pretty funny towards the middle and end. Just keep watching!

I like the concept of this one, but it does get a little…uncomfortable.
15 Tokyo Mater
This one is clearly kind of old, but I can’t resist a good parody, and Disney/Pixar sure did a good job of it. And who doesn’t love cars that speak Japanese?
14 Masquerade

Do you feel like your life is a lie? Like all the people around you are only showing you fake smiles? You are not alone.
13 Reach
Oh, the wretched life of a little robot. This short was particularly stirring.
12 The Fly
I wish I had the power to slice flies in half with a blade. Although I suppose it’s probably more effective to simply squish them with something in case they multiply, as this video suggests. Do they really look like that on the inside? In my experience, flies’ guts are yellow…

Not a lot of great animation comes from China, which is why I am quite pleased with this short. The theme definitely has the influences of someone who grew up in China. The explanation:
This is a story about mental pressure. In this story, the kids are constantly forced to bury themselves into their endless homework by those giant monsters behind them. The children’s brains are filled with water that can be heated by tension. If a kid is overstressed, the water in their brain would boil and produce steam, which becomes the food of the greedy monsters and the energy of the whole city. Thus, those poor children repeat their lives day after day, serving as the powerplant of their world, spending their childhood in tragic misery……

If only science were actually this fun to learn.

Simple but evocative.

This is one of my absolute favorites — a beautifully charming story about two octopi in love. The original/official video can be found here but is not working for me for some reason.
7 The Mysterious Explorations of Jasper Morello
Though longer than most animated short films, the story is morbidly fascinating, and the animation style is lovely.

A very interesting concept: the video, installed in elevators, scrolls up or down between Heaven and Hell as the elevator moves between floors. The way that all 400+ video clips flow together is fantastic, and I would love to be able to see the details more closely. The ominous music reminds me of that weird demonic part of the original Fantasia.
5 The Terrible Thing of Alpha-9!

This is not my preferred style of animation, but this short was actually very moving. You can read some notes from the director at the link above.

I don’t think I completely understand the premise of this one [those silly French people], but I do believe that this is the first time I have found an animated short film character attractive. And you can’t go wrong with hot pink Nike dunks. The interview with the creator is here.
Sometimes the Oregon Trail parodies get old, but this one actually made me laugh.

Who doesn’t love adorable aliens?
1 Alarm
The storyline is not extremely compelling, but I like the character, and the quality of animation is top notch.
